“The world breaks everyone and afterwards many are stronger at the broken places.” - Ernest Hemingway This is the era of perfection. The era where you are told how to look or else you are not considered beautiful to the world: Flawless skins, shiny apples, unsullied digital screens, spotless windows. The era where people go through extremes even just to feel beautiful. We should hear the extreme consumption habits of today as a calling to discover sustainability and giveback. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold. As a philosophy, kintsugi is based on the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, an embracing of the flawed or imperfect. Not only is there no attempt to hide the damage, but the repair is literally illuminated. When you think you are broken, you can pick up the pieces, put them back together, and learn to embrace the cracks. Kintsugi teaches you that your broken places make you stronger and better than ever before. Kintsugi treats cracks and repairs as events in the life of an object, rather than allowing its service to end at the time of its damage or breakage.Details

For her, a house or a room is not just an ordinary space surrounded by four walls. It is a private space that contains eccentric sceneries, windows opening to the gardens, memories, dreams, and ideas. This being the case, in her paintings, the space emerges as a place that offers all these states and at the same time where the individual conceals oneself. The spaces we encounter when we look at the paintings of Begüm Mütevellioğlu always offer us hints. They are telling the identity of the ones inhabiting them, are carrying the traces of life experiences. We can also find plants, which is her personal area of interest, at the seat of honor in the calm compositions that move along the relationship between individual and space and mostly contain the object-space-body unity. While tackling identity-building via spaces, especially via indoor spaces, she conveys to us her belief that it is sufficient to address the living space in order to recognize a character or to see belongingness. She exposes the relationship the art establishes with the daily life. Each room, sofa, table, mirror, chair, plant in the spaces of Mütevellioğlu almost personifies; turning into a person with character. Begüm Mütevellioğlu, who graduated from Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education Department of Art and Crafts Teacher Education and Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, went to Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 2013 on a student exchange program while continuing her post-graduate studies in Painting in MSFAU Institute of Fine Arts. The artist continues her Phd studies in MSFAU Institute of Fine Arts. The work: “Ne çiçektir biliriz” (A flower by any other name), oil on paper, 28x19 cm, 2015Details
